Yassin's Poems

DO SOMETHING

This is not rain falling,
But rockets and bombs
Causing a red flood
Of our youths’ blood.
This is the mercy of the dictator.
Surely not God’s order.

Listen to me O my dear,
I am coming with a new voice.
I have a different song
I want everyone to hear.

I know for certain
Who took my life’s spring,
Who destroyed our Land,
Who put out the Nerges’ eyes.

I saw and I heard,
I was not blind nor deaf.
Why are we not doing something?
Why must we remain as dead?

1987 by Yassin Aref

Nerges are Kurdish lilies, and are a national symbol, like the Austrian eidelwiess.
