There Is No Separation

They tied my hands and ankles
then they threw me in a small cell.
They shut the door bars strongly,
I looked at them and laughed.
They were astonished
and mocked me, asking
"You still laugh while you are a captive?"
I replied, "O you poor souls,
you don’t have anything
but my body.
I am free!
My heart, soul and mind
are all in another world,
out of your hands’ reach."

I composed sad poems with my tears
and wrote a tragic story
full of pain and sadness.
I sent them all to my teacher
who told me: Lover, do not complain!
I asked, How can I not complain
while every night I am awake,
crying because of this separation?
My heart is broken, I am missing my beloved,
my days are full of loneliness and grief
far away from my family.

My teacher smiled at me and said,
As long as the hearts are acquainted,
as long as the spirits are connected,
as long as the souls are united,
wherever they send the bodies,
the lovers will never be separated.
